Project

The Uruguayan-German Dialogue on Agriculture (DAUA) is a bilateral cooperation initiative designed to strengthen the exchange knowledge and experiences concerning soil microbiome and agroecological production systems, with a focus on sustainability and climate resilience. It promotes research, dissemination, and the application of agroecological practices in collaboration with various stakeholders from the agricultural sectors of Uruguay and Germany.

This technical dialogue also has a regional and supra-regional character. It brings together experts and managers from governmental and scientific institutions of both countries, as well as professionals from Latin American research networks. It fosters the exchange of experiences and collaboration to address common challenges in agriculture and promote more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems throughout the region.

Thematic Fields of Work

DAUA’s fields of work include soil microbiology, bio-inputs, carbon sequestration in soil, agricultural extension, and hemp.

The extensive and successful history of cooperation between Uruguay and Germany in the agricultural and forestry sectors highlights the importance of this collaboration for the future development of sustainable agriculture that conserves natural resources.

The project consists of three interrelated components, creating synergies among them:

Component 1

Scientists from the JKI in Germany and the INIA in Uruguay are working together to carry out experiments under laboratory, greenhouse and field conditions. The aim is to harness the potential of the soil microbiome for healthy soils and climate-resilient agroecosystems.

Component 2

A bilateral dialogue platform between Uruguay and Germany enables the exchange of knowledge, experiences, ideas and opinions among stakeholders from different sectors on the key fields of work of DAUA. The results will be disseminated broadly and made available to decision-makers.

Component 3

A regional dialogue platform contributes to existing and newly created regional and supra-regional networks – focusing on DAUA's thematic fields of work. Priority it given to Latin American countries and the coordination of the Latin American projects of the Bilateral Cooperation Programme (BKP) of the BMEL.

The project is designed to contribute to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN):

Funding Structure

The Uruguayan-German Dialogue on Agriculture is a project funded by the  Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Germany (BMEL) for the timeframe 15. November 2023 to 14. November 2026.
