Study trip to Germany 2025: soil health and carbon

As part of our annual study trip (FIF) to Germany, a delegation including the team of the Uruguayan-German Dialogue on Agriculture (DAUA), representatives of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) and INIA Uruguay, together with project managers from IAK Agrar Consulting GmbH and GFA Consulting Group GmbH, participated in the SoilCarbon4Climate event and in meetings with authorities of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) and the Embassy of Uruguay in Berlin.

The goal: to strengthen the exchange between Uruguay and Germany, focusing on soil health and carbon, as well as to explore opportunities for scientific, technological and institutional cooperation.

Day 1
The delegation was welcomed at the BMLEH headquarters by ministry authorities, together with representatives of the Embassy of Uruguay in Berlin, the 4p1000 Initiative and the Julius Kühn-Institute (JKI). It was an enriching occasion of presentations and exchanges to further strengthen ties.

Subsequently, they participated in the first day of the international conference “SoilCarbon4Climate: Pathways and Solutions for Soil Carbon in Temperate Regions” (September 11–13 in Berlin), organized by the BMLEH, the “4 per 1000” initiative and Germany’s Federal Humus Program. The event brings together key actors from temperate regions to discuss soil health and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, share innovations and explore joint solutions to climate change.

The first day of the event included opening remarks by Alois Rainer (Federal Minister of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity of Germany) and Stéphane Le Foll (President of the “4 per 1000” Initiative), as well as keynote speeches on the potential of soil carbon sequestration and the role of the private sector in sustainable soil management. The session also included a valuable exchange with farmers’ experiences and a multi-stakeholder roundtable on the benefits of sustainable soil management.
