Uruguay and Germany strengthen agricultural ties in Montevideo

On September 25 and 26, 2025, we welcomed in Montevideo a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity of Germany (BMLEH) and GFA Consulting Group GmbH, composed of Bernd Schwang (Head of Division for International Projects and Food Security, BMLEH), Corinna Trips (Head of Division for the Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East, BMLEH), Dr. Andreas Gramzow (Program Director, GFA), and Martin Kuntze-Fechner (Project Manager, GFA), responsible for the DAUA project.

The agenda began at the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries (MGAP), with a meeting chaired by Minister Alfredo Fratti, together with authorities and technical teams (UAI, Forest Bioeconomy, DGRN, DGF, DGSG, Gender, Agroecology, OPYPA, and DGSA) and representatives of INIA Uruguay. Discussions focused on national agricultural policy, sustainable use of natural resources, and the experience of the Responsible Soil Use and Management Plan (PUMRS) as a key tool for soil conservation. The German counterparts shared experiences and highlighted similarities between both countries.

Later, a second meeting took place with representatives of a business delegation from Baden-Württemberg (Germany), chaired by UAI Director Dr. Nelson Yamil Chabén, with participation from the Uruguayan Exporters Union. The focus was on economic cooperation and opportunities to promote exports in the agricultural sector.

In the afternoon, the BMLEH and GFA delegation, together with the Uruguayan-German Dialogue on Agriculture (DAUA), held an exchange session at the Mercosur building with PROCISUR, IICA Uruguay Representation, and INIA to strengthen research, innovation, and technology transfer in the region.

The day concluded with a working dinner alongside AHK Uruguay – the Uruguayan-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry – and the German business delegation, strengthening ties with the private sector.

On the 26th, the visit concluded at INIA – National Directorate, with an exchange on the progress of the DAUA project with Carolina Leoni (Principal Researcher and Co-Leader of Component 1 of DAUA) and Sebastián Oviedo (Strategic Planning and International Cooperation).

These meetings were a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties, share knowledge, and project new forms of cooperation between Uruguay and Germany in support of sustainable, resilient, and innovative agriculture.
DAUA thanks all institutions that made this agenda possible.
